Rise in Public Service Costs in Buenos Aires

Buenos Aires, November 21 (NA) – The average household expenditure in the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area (AMBA), without subsidies, to cover electricity, natural gas, running water, and public transport costs was 173,480 pesos in November, representing a 1.8% increase from the previous month. Year-on-year, spending on this basket of public services was 30% higher than in the same month of 2024, and so far in 2025, it has risen by 23%. According to Tariff and Subsidy Report No. 32, prepared by the IIEP Tariff and Subsidies Observatory (UBA-CONICET) and received by the Argentine News Agency, this trend has been in effect since December 2023. The 1.8% monthly increase in the basket is the result of tariff hikes across all categories and a rise in electricity consumption. For gas, the fixed charge increased by 3.5% and the variable charge by 4% on average. For electricity, tariff schedules showed a 3.6% increase in the fixed charge and a 3.8% increase in the variable charge. In the transportation sector, the average weighted cost of a bus fare rose by 6.6% in November. These changes occurred alongside an increase in electricity consumption and a decrease in gas demand. The reduction in subsidies for these services was 44%, due to a 20% real cut in transport and a 44% cut in energy. Households in the AMBA pay tariffs that cover, on average, 52% of the costs, while the state covers the remaining 48%.
